Various organisations working for rights of tribals are red faced over the government's push for a REDD Plus scheme that aims at afforestation activities on a large scale to create carbon sinks which can be sold to developed countries against payment.

The World Bank, international organisations like the UN, corporations and a few large NGOs are promoting the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) scheme with the idea that protecting forests will reduce climate change.

As per this scheme, the rich countries and their companies, instead of reducing the amount of carbon dioxide they emit, can pay developing countries to preserve forests and capture carbon in these carbon sinks created by forests.
